This method offers a positive, safe and individual approach to Dementia Care which many residents face today. Our home also offers many safety features that include immediate notification of a resident getting out of bed, if a resident has fallen, tracking behaviors, wandering behaviors, and sound/light notifications for door bells, phone ringing and other quick timely notifications. Staff Education

Teepa Snow is an occupational therapist with close to forty years of clinical educational experience and currently holds clinical appointments at Duke and University of North Carolina.  Teepa has worked in a variety of settings including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, retirement communities, nursing homes, home care, hospice and community settings.  She has taught at universities and colleges from associate degree to post-doctoral levels.  Throughout her professional career, Teepa has worked closely with clinical researchers in geriatrics and has extensive experience in neurological care settings, working with people who have had head injuries, strokes, and other central nervous system failures.  For many years, she served as the lead trainer and educational director for the Alzheimer's Association in Eastern North Carolina.  It is through this rich and diverse career, filled with opportunities and challenges, that Teepa has developed her knowledge and skill.

The Gardens Care Homes training

At the Gardens Care Homes, all staff are currently being trained in the Teepa Snow methods.  Basic principles of training include the following:
  1. To care for residents with dementia, we focus on the moment we are given and let go of what was, what should be, or how the senior should be acting.  We adjust with the senior as the dementia progresses and meet them where they are with their cognitive and physical capabilities.
  2. Our staff has learned to respond to behaviors, not react.  We will continue to refine this as we learn, in more depth, about the stages of Dementia.
  3. Teepa Snow classifies dementia into gem stages. Sapphire, Diamond, Emerald, Amber, Ruby, Pearl.  Along with The Gardens staff knowing the stages, they will also refine what each stage needs to thrive with the senior's vision changing, language adjustments, touching (helping dress and care) and motivating the senior to eat, shower and comply with basic needs being met.
  4. A major emphasis for seniors with dementia is to do "with" seniors, not "for" seniors.  In other words, as much as the senior can do along with us will be beneficial to all seniors and help them still feel like they are in control of their life and body.  We will use what we see, hear, feel, and experience with the person to guide our behavior for our seniors.
The Gardens Care Homes is excited to provide quality care for all of our seniors.  Most seniors have a level of dementia that requires thoughtfulness and appropriate responses from staff to increase the caliber of care needed.  Families may ask The Gardens Care Homes management for educational resources as well.  Thank you for trusting us with your loved one.
